Virgil Griffith, Ethereum's head of special projects, who was arrested on charges of conspiring with North Korea, has been denied bail. According to Inner City Press, the US Attorney's Office said that Griffith's text messages and his concealment of his own assets were decisive. Recall that the programmer was arrested on Thanksgiving Day for illegally traveling to North Korea and allegedly providing the country with information on how to use Ethereum to circumvent economic sanctions. Ethereum programmer facing charges The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced that Griffith was charged with violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by traveling to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). A week after his arrest, the programmer's legal representative claimed that Griffith would be released from prison after posting bail. However, new information that emerged during the investigation appears to have changed the judge's mind on the matter. According to Inner City Press, the judge cited as a reason for not allowing him to leave, the issue of Griffith not disclosing "sufficient financial information" because he did not tell the court that he owns real estate and a company that is incorporated in Puerto Rico. In addition, the court was reportedly concerned that the arrestee would again seek to flee outside the U.S. border. One of the main evidence presented by the court was the alleged text messages that Griffith sent to his parents. According to the U.S. Attorney, the text messages stated that he maintained "the world's largest portal to the Dark Web." A paragraph will always be found? However, it's possible that the U.S. Attorney's Office didn't really know how to keep the programmer behind bars for longer and used the issue of real estate and text messages in this topic, which may in fact have been evidence of the arrestee's black humor, but certainly not proof that he was behind any platform on the Dark Web. Defendants add that Griffith repeatedly tweeted about his trip and stay in North Korea, hence the conclusion that he had no intent to commit an offense and had nothing to hide. Tags Ethereum court
