German automotive giant Daimler AG, maker of brands like Mercedes-Benz and Smart, is unveiling its own blockchain technology-based cryptocurrency, MobiCoin. All this at yesterday's Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. The project, launched in February this year, would aim to popularize a safe and eco-friendly driving style. The idea is that drivers of the latest cars produced by Daimler AG who drive economically and do not exceed the speed limit could be rewarded with MobiCoin coins. Those who manage to accumulate the largest number of coins would receive VIP tickets to various sports and cultural events, including: MercedesCup Final, DTM Races or Berlin Fashion Week. The project is already in the testing phase with 500 selected test drivers. At the moment it is not known whether MobiCoins will be exchangeable for fiat or other types of cryptocurrencies, or whether their role will be limited only to the function of a kind of "loyalty points" functioning on the basis of blockchain technology. Daimler AG is not the only corporation so prominent in the industry, which in recent months has taken an active interest in the practical use of the concept of distributed ledgers. Over the past two months, manufacturers such as BMW, Volkswagen and Porsche, among others, have declared cooperation with companies directly related to blockchain technology. The latter would work on using blockchain solutions for, among other things, the development of autonomous car technology. Tags daimler cryptocurrency cryptocurrencies Mercedes
