A few days ago, Save the Children, an international foundation, joined charities that accept Bitcoin in the form of grants for their activities.   As it turns out, for good reason:   We've noticed the generosity of the Bitcoin community (...), so we can help even more children." - officially admitted Ettore Rossetti, director of digital marketing and social media.   Save the Children is an international non-profit organization with nearly a century of tradition. Founded in 1919 by sisters Eglantyne Jebb and Dorothy Buxton, it originally aimed to help children affected by World War I and the October Revolution in Russia. It has now helped more than 143 million minors worldwide in the past year alone. In 2014, the organization focused its efforts on West Africa due to the ebola outbreak occurring there.   Save the Children is just one of numerous examples of organizations that use Bitcoin for a worthy cause. Just a few days ago, donations in bitcoin were also accepted by the American Red Cross. Founded in 1881, the organization, whose honorary chairman is always the current incumbent president of the United States, is a partner of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent. Its revenues and operating expenses in 2013 were more than $3.4 billion, and its primary mission is to provide assistance to victims of disasters and emergencies in the United States. Jennifer Niyangoda, director of corporate programs at the foundation, seems to understand the Bitcoin phenomenon and the perceived potential of its users. In an official statement, she acknowledged that:   this move will allow a new generation of donors to assist people in need."   The Connie Gallipi Foundation, on the other hand, organized a panel discussion on charity a few months ago, where the role and potential of cryptocurrencies in this regard was an important point. The speeches cited several specific examples from the Americas in which Bitcoin played a significant role.   At the beginning of this year the BitGive foundation also took an active part in the action "The Water Project", which consists of raising money to provide running water to people in need in Africa. This is the second such action of the foundation collecting bitcoins for its goals. Previously, it supported the campaign to help victims of the tsunami in the Philippines.   Polish organizations and foundations are also not passive in the face of the potential offered by bitcoin to raise funds to help the needy. Among those who accept donations in bitcoin are the "Mam głos" Animal Welfare Association, the "Otwarte klatatki" Association, the Hospice for Homeless Cats, the Bullerbyn Foundation, and the Asylum for Rabbits.   An extremely interesting initiative deserving a separate paragraph is The Bitcoin Jar - a social game and loyalty program in one. At www.thebitcoinjar.com, each company or organization can create their own "jar" to which they collect tips from their customers. The fun is that the moment the jar is broken, a certain number of free services or products are available for a certain group of people. Thanks to this, the company gains a new form of advertising, it can also make its events more attractive. However, more and more companies decide to donate tips for charity, thereby warming their image in the media.   Charity events associated with Bitcoin not only increase the interest of the global community in cryptocurrencies, but also show that this technology should not be associated only with speculation, money laundering and the sale of illegal stimulants. It is also worth noting that thanks to its technical capabilities Bitcoin gives non-profit organizations the chance to collect donations from all over the world in a very convenient and simple way. With the involvement of the BTC community in the promotion of the currency it can be expected that foundations accepting bitcoins can also count on significant material benefits.   Jacek Walewski Photo: Flickr.com, CC license Any reproduction, distribution, electronic processing and transmission of content from bitcoin.pl website requires prior consent of the portal.
