Large cryptocurrency exchange Exmo has lost 5 percent of its assets due to a hacking attack. Currently, the platform has halted withdrawals. Exmo was attacked by hackers Exmo, a UK-based cryptocurrency exchange, suffered a major breach of its security systems, causing the platform to freeze all withdrawals. According to a December 21 announcement, Exmo experts detected suspicious activity related to withdrawals on Monday. The issue was that large amounts of the platform's major coins, such as Bitcoin (BTC), were being sent outside the platform's hot wallets. Maria Stankevich, head of business development at the Exmo exchange, told Cointelegraph that the incident "is nothing very serious," as the affected wallets represent only 5 percent of all assets on the exchange. As the announcement added, "all assets that are on cold wallets are safe." According to the announcement, other affected cryptocurrencies include Ether (ETH), XRP, Tether (USDT), Zcash (ZEC) and Ethereum Classic (ETC). The exchange also mentioned that it has discovered crypto wallets that were likely involved in the hack, while asking larger exchanges to monitor them and see if the funds stolen from it end up on their trading platforms. Stankevich noted that the exchange has not yet calculated the full amount of losses it has suffered, saying that Exmo is now focused on tracking the flow of withdrawn funds. Hold on to your deposits! Exmo has launched an investigation into its security systems and reported the matter to London police. The company has also asked its users not to deposit any funds into Exmo wallets until the issue is resolved. "We want to assure you that if any user funds are affected by this incident, they will be refunded in full by Exmo," the company added. In December, Exmo was "provisionally registered" by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, allowing it to continue trading cryptocurrencies for an extended period, until July 9, 2021. By then, the country's digital currency market is expected to be regulated. Tags exmo exchange hackers
