Low-cost airline Peach Avitation becomes the first carrier of its kind in Japan to decide to accept payment in bitcoin for tickets on its flights. Low-cost airline Peach Avitation becomes the first carrier of its kind in Japan to decide to accept payment in bitcoin for tickets on its flights. Peach Aviation's decision is undoubtedly related to the Japanese government's legalization of bitcoin as legal tender in the country. Shortly after the introduction of the new law, i.e. on April 1 this year, we are slowly dealing with a sort of (and I guess this won't be an overstated term) Japanese "bitcoin-mania". The cryptocurrency will be used to book tickets before the end of this year, we read from the airline's official statement released in Tokyo on Monday. According to Peach CEO Shinichi Inoue, one of the reasons for the company's decision was to attract interest from (mostly) young customers from other countries in the Asian region, most notably China and South Korea: "We want to encourage foreign visitors as well as spur the revitalization of Japan's regions," Inoue said in an interview with the Bloomberg news agency. In addition, Peach intends to begin active cooperation with the Japanese government as well as domestic companies to further spread cryptocurrency technology and further facilitate its daily use. Peach Aviation's bitcoin airline payment service is being implemented in partnership with Chinese mobile payment system Alipay. However, Japan's Peach Airlines is not the first airline to decide to accept payments of this kind. Bitcoins are already accepted by such carriers as Latvian Air Baltic and Mexican TAR Airlines, among others. Peach is controlled by Japan's largest airline, ANA, which incidentally increased its stake in the company above 66 percent this year. Peach currently offers low-cost flights to more than 17 destinations (both domestic and international): including: South Korea, Hong Kong, China or Taiwan. The airline has a fleet of 18 airplanes. Peach's annual revenue oscillates at the level of 14 billion yen or about 128 million dollars (data for 2013). Everything indicates that the bitcoin trend in Japan is just beginning and at the moment 1BTC there is already worth more than 10 000 PLN, which is much more than in other parts of the world (Poland 8250 PLN). photo: Flickr.com Tags acceptance acceptance bitcoin btc Japan airlines
